Walking Group

Open meeting - all welcome

We usually meet on the last Saturday of each month, departing at 09.30 prompt from the Car Park at Oakwood Church.

Our circular walks are typically between 4 and 7 miles with the shorter walks mainly in the winter. They are sufficiently demanding to challenge some of our regulars - several of whom are well over 80 years of age though most are younger. Some parents / grandparents walk with children. When our walks are more demanding we try to offer a ‘B’ route so that everyone can participate while remaining safely within their capability

View detailed Ordnance Survey maps for destination, terrain and footpaths at www.streetmap.co.uk. A route planner, road level and static satellite images are available at www.maps.google.co.uk and 3D flyable satellite images are available on Google Earth

Boots or stout walking shoes, sufficiently warm /cool clothing, waterproofs and a day sized back pack are regular necessities

Summer walks (BST) almost always require Walkers to bring a packed lunch. In the Winter (GMT) we take hot drinks and snacks but try to schedule a pub or cafe ending for warming, refreshment and nourishment

The group generally drives to our start point which is rarely as much as an hour distant and frequently much nearer. Driving instructions are provided. We aim to minimise the number of cars we take for reasons of economy, environmental impact and reducing the pressure on available parking at our destinations. It is our custom for those Walkers who are being driven to contribute £3 each towards their volunteer driver’s fuel costs

Walking is FREE though you may incur incidental expenses such as transport, parking and refreshment

Walking Group

Keswick

For many years The Walking Group has travelled to Keswick for walk in The Lake District

We usually stay for a 2 or 3 night weekend in April or May, and in September or October.

Typically 15 to 20  Walkers come to stay B&B at Hazledene on The Heads, which we ‘take over’. We eat our main evening meals out, at restaurants in Keswick

Places at Hazledene are limited so we have occasionally overflowed into a nearby B&B
